Winning the 2nd season of MasterChef South Africa opened the door to a decade of storytelling through food. In the MasterChef kitchen I learnt that when things got tough, I leaned on generational wisdom because it moved through me with ease. I learnt to listen to my instincts and make decisions that felt right in the moment. I learnt to trust myself.
In the wake of my win, my narrative around food was about pleasure, performance and perfection. But since then, things have changed. In 2016, I started running, and I realised that the exquisite tasting menus and wine pairings I had built a career around, no longer supported the life I wanted. I wasn’t just asking what tasted good. I was asking what truly nourished me. That question became the beginning of a more authentic and purposeful journey.
I then studied nutrition through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, which led me to complete my Master of Science in Psychology. I became fascinated with what made people behave the way that they did. Life experience, trauma, loss, grief - they all inform the way we move through this life. What we do for a living, the people we choose to engage with and of course, how we eat. Living a stress-free existence is close to impossible, but if we can name it, we can change it, and become intentional about our choices instead of moving through the world in a numb haze.
